Session Information

Foundational Approach to Handwriting:
Serving Students with SLDs

Students with specific learning differences, including dyslexia and dysgraphia, often struggle with handwriting and written expression. Educators and Occupational Therapists are essential team members in addressing the foundational skills needed to write. Recognizing the difference between missed learning and SLD is critical. Likewise, identifying the underlying barriers to writing is necessary.

The Intersection Between Sensory, Trauma, and Neurology

We are all neurodiverse. For some, such as those with Autism, they experience higher levels of dysregulation and social challenges. This session will discuss the connection between sensory, trauma, and self-regulation resilience through a neurobiological approach. Dr. Lyons will review the Self-regulation and Mindfulness program and the Trauma Treatment in ACTION Approach to empower students to embrace their neurodiversity.

Q&A: Advocating for Yourself & Your Students

As if supporting our students wasn't tough enough in the schools, we often have to be the ones to stand up and share why we need more time, materials, support, and, of course, money.

In this Q&A-based panel session, we'll ponder how to get the support you want, need, and deserve as a school-based OT practitioner.

Providing Sensory Supports Across All Educational Settings: From Least to Most Restrictive

This session is an opportunity to shift your mindset when it comes to using sensory supports within a school-based setting from least restrictive to most restrictive. Participants will learn alternative approaches to supporting each individual student's sensory needs to access their education, how to navigate conversations when sensory concerns appear, and how to add co-regulation goals to their OT toolbox.

ADL + IADL = A Big Deal

The purpose of IDEA is to ensure all students are prepared for life, which includes education, employment, and independent living. This means we can promote skills that are not just academic in the educational setting.

Having independent living skills which includes ADL and IADL skills is a predictor of post-secondary success. Come learn how we can develop these skills across the continuum from preschool through high school so students are successful upon graduation.

More sessions to be announced soon!

Conference Objectives

Through our six interactive sessions,

Identifying collaborative strategies aimed at supporting students in life skills programs across the education spectrum

Explaining how school-based OT practitioners can use a trauma-informed lens to create school-based OT interventions related to mental health programming

Recognizing occupation-based and task-specific strategies to support students experiencing traits commonly associated with dysgraphia

Identifying strategies for support students with sensory needs both in the classroom & in a sensory or motor lab

Identifying top-down approaches to supporting students with ADHD in their classroom setting

Audience & Education Level

The OT Schoolhouse Back To School Conference is intended for current school-based occupational therapy practitioners.

The conference consists of introductory-level courses. Some sessions will introduce intermediate-level concepts. No prerequisite courses are required, but one should have a general understanding of OT in the schools.

Elementary Classroom

2024 Conference Theme

OT Support for Diverse Learners

School-based OT is unique in many ways. In some ways, that makes it the setting you and I love so much.

Sure, we could work in another pediatric setting. However, very few other opportunities exist that would allow us to support children with such a wide variety of learning differences and needs.

That is what I love about working in the schools.

In school-based OT, we could be supporting a student with cerebral palsy one moment and an autistic child the next. We could be supporting a student who needs only accommodations to succeed or a student who needs an advanced treatment plan to access their curriculum.

That's why this year, we decided on "OT for Diverse Learners" as our conference theme.

Join us as we look to support you in supporting ALL of your students, not just those who would typically be identified as a student needing OT.

Distance Learning

Session Handouts & Replays

For each session, handouts will be made available to download and print prior to the start of the conference.

Participants will be able to download and print the slide and supplemental materials in the conference Portal one week before the conference.

Replays of each session will be available for four months. As a registered conference attendee, you will have access to the conference handouts, session video replays, and course community until December 31, 2024.

Community Engagement

Couple at an Event

What's a conference without the networking and sharing of ideas?

In addition to lively, interactive presentations, there will be designated times for live Q+A sessions with the presenters.

Likewise, we will have an online space dedicated to discussions related to the content of our guest speakers. You'll also have the opportunity to engage with other like-minded OTPs.

Join me and hundreds of other School-Based OTPs advancing our clinical skills

This conference is designed for you as a school-based OT practitioner.

Every speaker and presentation has been researched, vetted, and hand-selected to be relevant to the school-based OT practitioner who wants to help diverse learners access the least restrictive environment.

Each presenter has years of experience and has demonstrated the ethical decision-making you'd expect from the OT Schoolhouse!

At the OT Schoolhouse, we understand the intricacies of school-based OT and know the therapists and topics you want to learn more about.
