School-based OTs and COTAs, clinic-based pediatric OTs, teachers and special educators, OT students and new grads, and anyone leading a district handwriting or MTSS initiative. If you mentor, it’s also what you hand a new therapist every fall.
Why we wrote it this way
Handwriting instruction has been squeezed out while expectations have risen. Kids get pencils at three and four, before their hands are ready, and compensatory grasps often lock in by the end of kindergarten. We think readiness belongs back in the conversation, and the fastest route is a good handout in the hands of the adult who’s with that child all day.
You already know how this goes
You find a grip that works, and the child nails it in your session. By Thursday, the grip is in a desk, the thumb wrap is back, and the teacher didn’t notice because nobody told her what to look for. Meanwhile, you’re tracking eleven students’ grips in your head.
What we made
Jaime and Cindy kept hitting the same headaches on two continents: stubborn grasps, no classroom carryover, parents who don’t follow through, and no easy way to track grips or teach others to choose one. Picking the right grip is tricky; getting it used consistently is the hard part. So the first half teaches the why, and the second half is what you hand to everybody else.
The first half: clinical content
Fifteen chapters in four sections:
- Fundamentals: the research on four equally mature grasps, the limits of legibility studies, a Tier 1–3 MTSS framework, and grasp development.
- Evaluation: an evaluation form, report examples, the Gripipedia Pencil Grasp Decision Guide, shared definitions, and case studies.
- Teaching: age-based strategies, positioning, cues, and accommodations through the TIP Grip Protocol.
- Handwriting: posture, pressure, and a full chapter on left-handed writers.
Plus a parent FAQ you can hand over instead of explaining it again.
The second half: 42 resource pages
Every page is copy-ready for students, families, and colleagues, as long as the Gripipedia name stays on. It includes 18 “Let’s Try a Pencil Grip” one-pagers with product photos, righty and lefty positioning, tips for adults, and a reward chart.
